Annoying vertical scroll bar?

I currently installed a Windows XP Sp1 and later upgraded to SP2 on my p3 700mhz processor, 384mb ddram, using sony optical mouse, avast 4.7 antivirus. Now the problem am facing is anytime i open a program with a vertical scroll bar, the scrolling slider scrolls automatically down to the buttom of the opened window as if i were scrolling (eg ms word, adobe acrobat etc) and hence i cant read anything on the first page of the document and subsequent page but remains at the last page. and when i try to scroll the slider up, it "refuses" to move up. please what is the problem. googled but all i get are unrelated issues. thanks

More often than not, it's not a problem with the Operating System or even the drivers. I can't tell you how many times I've had to give a key or two a little "rap" to get it unstuck.

Give the PgDn, and down arrow keys a little tap to see if they are stuck. Also, a lot of mice have a button built into the wheel, press it down a few times to make sure it's not stuck either....

FWIW, this laptop I use is pretty new and cleaned quite often but sometimes the keys just stick.....Hope this helps.

reinstall the optical mouse, better online at their website rather offline with the cd
