In addition to virus programs, you need spyware. Even if the spyware comes with the virus software.

I use adware and SUperantispyware. Run them in safe mode (pressing F8 while booting) and keep them updated.

The reason things should be run in safe mode is because many of these wee buggers mimic real files and when you are in safe mode, not all files are loaded, they they are naked if you will.
