Problems with XP sound?

i have an inspirion2200, i had spyware doctor and norton 360 on my computer. one day the sound just quit working on my laptop, i uninstalled/reinstalled, updated, rolled back the driver; i even reinstalled the chipset and none of it worked. under the control panel it shows no device for audio and the drivers under hardware have yellow !'s. i know this means there are no drivers installed but like i said i have deleted them and reinstalled them and they still have the yellow marks. i used the driver disc and downloaded from dell. i think i have found the problem, i just need a little help, i ran a scan with avast anti virus and it found a trojan and worm that norton missed, both of them infected my windows system restore audio files, is there any way to delete these to get the sound working again or can i rename them? i have already reinstalled windows several times also, i don't have any idea how to fix this.

If you reinstalled Windows and it still doesn't work, then the audio files weren't the problem. It sounds like the sound chip just gave up the ghost. If it's under warranty, try getting Dell to fix it. If not, you might have to settle for a USB sound processor.
